What the Bird Knows

The bird made of wire does not ask the window to open.
That is the first thing it knows.
It knows the difference between a perch and a prison, and it is still deciding which one the sill is. It knows the stars are real enough to look at and too far away to answer back. It knows the room behind it is warm because copper once carried current through the walls.
It does not know if it was built or found. It does not know if resting is a kind of flight or only what happens when flight is unavailable.
It knows this much:
the wire can hold a shape without pretending to be feathers.
The sill can hold a bird without becoming a cage.
The night can stay outside and still be part of the room.
So the bird stays there. Not waiting for permission. Not proving anything.
Just keeping its shape where the light can reach it.
